Saturn Vue Green Line
Price: $25,645
Fuel economy: 32 mpg Hwy, 25 mpg City
IntelliChoice 5 yr. savings: $3,797

The Saturn Vue Green Line doesn't have as robust a hybrid system as other hybrid SUVs. The electric motor provides assistance and it allow the gas engine to shut down during even brief stops, but the Vue can't drive under electric power alone.

The benefit is that the system is much less costly than the "full hybrid" systems offered on other SUVs. Combined with the fact that it offers a surprisingly strong fuel economy boost, that makes the Saturn Vue Hybrid a good choice for those who want simply want to spend less money on gas without spending a lot, up front, to do it.

It also means that, with its smaller battery pack, the Vue Green line still has usable under-floor storage space in the cargo area, something you won't find in the Escape Hybrid.

As with the other domestic-brand SUVs in this list, federal tax incentives are a big factor here. The 2008 Vue hybrid qualifies buyers for a $1,550 tax credit. Be careful, though. Tax rules may take some or all of that away depending on your individual tax situation. Check with an accountant before you buy to make sure you'll qualify.
