After leading one of Google's top web-ranking teams, Patterson left the company to co-found Cuill (pronounced "cool," and since renamed Cuil) with husband Tom Costello and former Google colleague Russell Power last year. When it launched July 28, Patterson said it searches three times as many Web pages as Google, with fewer computers. (This article was updated July 28.)
