2009 BMW Z4
2009 BMW Z4
BMW managed to hold on relatively well while the rest of the auto industry got dragged down in 2008. For the luxury carmaker, keeping its focus on performance and fun will be all-important, even as the economy stays sour.

The new version of BMW's fun two-seat convertible gets a retractable hard-top roof this time around. In design, the style lies somewhere between the Z4's first-generation retro look and the second generation's more modern, angular look.

It will be available with a choice of two 6-cylinder engines, one producing 255 horsepower and the other, with twin turbochargers, putting out 300 hp. Buyers can also get a six-speed manual transmission, a dual-clutch seven-speed automatic or a six-speed automatic.

The new Z4's Dynamic Drive Control system allows the driver to set various performance characteristics, including steering wheel and gas pedal response.
